gay...? A Textile Exhibition by CJ Starc & Julia Catania

  • The Old Bar 74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy, VIC, 3065 Australia (map)

A textile exhibition celebrating the clarity and confusion of queerness. By Artists CJ Starc & Julia Catania.

June 13-26

Opening night June 13. 7 - 10:30pm.

gay..? reflects upon our past and present queer selves. We employ traditional embroidery techniques while applying a queer contemporary lens. Through our bright and tongue-in-cheek style of textile art, we depict feelings of confusion amongst the clarity that follows coming out, as we settle into our respective queer existences. Each artwork is named after questions that we asked ourselves about our identities, some of which we still don’t know the answers to. We interrogate the idea that queer people should have their identities all figured out. Our playful artworks explore the affirming and transformative side of confusion and questioning.

Musicians Leo and GUTHRIE join the artists on opening night starting at 8:30pm.

This event is sponsored by our friends and supporters of the arts, Mountain Goat Brewery. This exhibition runs from June 13-26, 3-8pm daily!

The Old Bar Gallery and The Old Bar acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which The Old Bar and The Old Bar Gallery reside. We pay our respect to Elders past and present and acknowledge that sovereignty has never been ceded.
