“Making it Home”

  • The Old Bar 74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy, VIC, 3065 Australia (map)

Vee Rodrigues’ (@Felony Frequency) "Making It Home" exhibition tracks their 10 year personal and artistic journey in Naarm (Melbourne) since their immigration from Ohlone Land (San Francisco). Using photography, they document how their arts practice and lived experience have evolved and affected one another.

The exhibition explores Vee’s attempts to find stability, connection and to feel “at home” in a place with constant social and economic changes. Being a Queer, Mexican-American immigrant with disabilities from the USA complicates this journey, with works reflecting Vee’s evolving, liminal positionality and perspective from outsider to “citizen”, continually striving to exert their own vision for social change and inclusion in their new “home/s”.

The show tracks Vee’s shifts in medium and style; beginning with 35mm film street photography and portraiture; still lifes with a digital camera; cell phone photography during the pandemic; and concluding with 120 format multiple exposure film photography, combining contrasting images with their home/s in San Francisco and Melbourne, coinciding with increased life stability and being granted citizenship.

Joining Vee on opening night are bands Racerage & Astrid Ampersand!
