CANVAS COLLECTIVE - EMBRODIERY WORKSHOP

  • The Old Bar 74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy, VIC, 3065 Australia (map)

Introducing yet another KILLER workshop, taking place at @theoldbargallery during the “Am I Dreaming?” Exhibition

This embroidery workshop will be facilitated by the wonderful @genrenonmerci

“This relaxed five-hour workshop will teach you how to depict bodies with embroidery thread using a backstitch as well as short and long stitches. You will choose from various nude reference images to explore depicting bodies. You are also welcome to change aspects of these reference images or combine reference images in the drawing process. By the end of the workshop, you will have started your own nude embroidery artwork! You will leave with an embroidery kit (needle, fabric, hoop, embroidery thread) and a booklet to continue developing your skills!

In 5 hours you will learn the following:

- Introduction to your materials:

In this part, you will learn about what you will be working with, and how to use it!

- Learn some stitches:

You will learn backstitch as well as short and long stitches. These will provide the base for you to draw with thread in the final part!

- Drawing bodies:

In this part, you will search through reference images and use them to do a quick sketch of a body. You can combine images, or just use one. How you draw the body is up to you! Be imaginative too! Wanna add in some top surgery scars? Go ahead! This drawing does not need to be perfect - It's meant to be a rough sketch!

- Combining the first 3 parts and drawing with thread:

In this final part, we will be moving to the hoop and fabric! You will pick your fabric and a thread (or threads). Then, using the sketchy drawing, you will start drawing with a pen on your fabric. When you have done your drawing, we will start using stitching techniques to cover the pen marks to start creating your very own artwork.”
