“Cloaked” a debut exhibition by Pearl the Wench

  • The Old Bar 74-76 Johnston Street Fitzroy, VIC, 3065 Australia (map)

In their debut exhibition Pearl the Wench features works that explore the effects of a traumatic history. This series comes from a period of acceptance for Pearl and finding their voice to talk about things they’d sworn never to discuss.

The artist speaks on their concern about their own fragility when accepting a traumatic childhood, the colours leaking and bursting like their desire to love themselves and a hope that one day the fear will pass. The cloaked beings mortalised here are fictitious, nameless, faceless watchers with red hands that take away people’s pain. They converse on the artist’s memories, mental illness, body and mind, as well as death, duality, mysticism, the unknown and human perception. They are whole worlds as well as sensations and moments in human existence.

“To summarise vaguely; waking up can be difficult when you’re so tired, coming back can be strange when you’ve been gone for so long. “
